Strate is South Africa’s Central Securities Depository, internationally recognized as a Financial Market Infrastructure. At the beginning of 2002, most of the organizational knowledge resided outside of Strate, with the consultants who helped to establish the business and the IT systems which were so critical to its functioning. Nihilent spearheaded a cultural transformation using MC3 TM , its patented knowledge and change management framework. Deployment of this multi-disciplinary approach encouraged the employees to learn, share and communicate more openly, slowly gaining momentum and self-reliance.
South African Airways (SAA), is South Africa's largest domestic and international airline company flying to over 700 destinations throughout the world and carrying 6.5 million passengers each year. SAA employs close to 12,000 people worldwide and is one of the few profitable African airlines. As part of its ‘Perfecting the Basics’ corporate goal, Nihilent implemented the Competency Assessment System and undertook Competency Identification and Development for its Staff, thereby establishing competency as the foundation for recruitment, training, career development and succession planning.
Sasol Limited is one of Africa's major producers of chemicals and liquid fuels products, and a key player in the South African oil industry. And Sasol Technology [STIM], a group company, deals with research, engineering and project management, technology and new business development, information, and logistics. As part of its Knowledge Management Initiative, Nihilent co-created Knowledge-maps, the desired and actual knowledge-maps to assess the competency of individuals with respect to their roles and responsibilities leading to an overall fitment factor. These were institutionalized using learning and knowledge processes, which empowered STIM to service its internal customers better.
Standard Bank is a leader in banking technology in South Africa, where it delivers services through more than 1000 points of representation. Standard Bank also services 18 sub-Saharan countries and 21 countries on other continents, including the key financial centers of Europe, the United States and Asia. Having stabilized the operations within centralized fulfillment facility, a need was felt to embark on the next wave of transformation, aimed at optimization, a significant element of which was workforce capacity optimization. Nihilent conducted a detailed work-study to compute realistic processing efforts, and mapped it against work volumes. The capacity plan was then adjusted to business cyclicality achieving a fine balance between permanent and temporary workforce, thereby providing a mechanism to optimize capacity planning.
MultiChoice is the leading digital satellite TV service provider in Africa, serving over 6.7 million customers, with a bouquet of options offering general entertainment, movies, lifestyle & culture, sport, documentaries, news & commerce, children, music, religion and consumer channels to MultiChoice subscribers across the continent. Nihilent conducted an independent evaluation of performance management practices and made significant recommendations around the setting of performance agenda, frequency of performance reviews, performance linked incentives, leadership pipeline and career progression, competency based human capital development, and optimizing the use of the PeopleSoft e-Performance system.
First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Ltd is a full-service banking group, headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, with the vision ‘to be the premier financial services group of African origin’. In its pursuit to become operationally excellent, and in line with the Central Bank guidance, FCMB identified a set of best practice standards for adoption. Nihilent championed the adoption of the Skills Framework for the Information Age [SFIA], and helped FCMB with a assessment and a detailed roadmap based on the gaps. FCMB seeks to make SFIA the core foundation for all stages of the skills management cycle: resource planning, recruitment, deployment, assessment, development, and remuneration.
Tata Power, a part of the renowned Tata Group, is an Indian electric utility company based in Mumbai. The Strategic Electronics Division [SED] has been engaged in defence systems and engineering for over four decades. It works with the MoD and laboratories to provide products and solutions for the defence requirements of the country. Given the obligation to support its products and services for over 15 years, SED had to grapple hard with challenges around technology obsolescence and employee turnover. Nihilent’s intervention was focused on building communities of practice to leverage the collective wisdom to increase responsiveness and innovation. Additional emphasis was also laid on meeting the requirements of JRDQV, a Malcolm Baldridge based business excellence framework adopted by the Tata Group Companies.
Ubank Limited, formerly known as Teba Bank, is a South African bank operating in the microfinance sector. Its main focus is in the mining sector and lower-income blue-collar worker. With the vision to strengthen its core banking platform, Ubank initiated project ‘Khulu’, which means ‘BIG’ in the local Zulu language. Nihilent was appointed as the people change specialist with the objective of ensuring a smooth transition. Nihilent front-ended the change and roll-out across all its branches, acted as the single point of contact streamlining the communication between staff across functions and geographies, and the system implementers.
Absa Group Limited (Absa), a member of the Barclays Group, is one of South Africa's largest financial services groups offering a complete range of banking, bancassurance and wealth management products and services.Nihilent conducted a skills inventory assessment for Absa Retail Delivery, a conglomeration of sales forces from various segment and product and service business units, covering 9500 employees across 9 provinces, 70 areas, 746 branches. This assessment, executed in a span of 45 days, shaped the learning and development priorities for its sizable workforce.
